Dr. Toast hails from San Francisco, and this is his third album release. His other self-released albums, Crunchy and Interdimensional Laundry stirred massive acclaim amongst the circles that were lucky enough to get their hands on them. Oz So Late acutely displays Toast's approach to depth through minimalism. Released in an era of electronic music production where wanton layering of sound samples has laid waste to the traditional methods of musical composition, Dr. Toast's music builds on themes and explores the places music can take the listener.
Oz So Late's relaxed downtempo rhythm structures strike a chord with the dedicated chill-out music heads as well as DJs. The album's attention to melody, and funk edge will appeal to neophytes..

With "Oz So Late" Dr. Toast has delivered a slice of audio delight akin to LSG's phenomenal "Into Deep" album. Although you won't find the smoky vocals of Cybele De Silveira to accompany Dr. Toast, because in fact there largely are no vocals, you will find beautiful melodies that twist and turn through solid beats and warm synth oscillation.
In comparison to Into Deep the percussion on Oz So Late is lighter; still head-noddingly strong, but not as heavy, and although the albums lead track "Push This Button" is sure to catch your attention, for this reviewer, the truly surprising songs come later on.
"A Beautiful Melody" is sure to get your head nodding and swaying, before it's slowly ebbing strings melt you.
"The Way of Truth And Love" at one second short of ten minutes long, is probably most deserving of comparison to LSG. It slowly cascades, growing stronger with each new element introduced to the sound; simple, ping-pong synths, supported by flanged sweeps, sweet chorus strings, climaxing with a breakbeat kick. Very nice.
"We Saw Color" makes perfect use of vocoded voices and funky, languid, broken beats. Simply a masterpiece that you need to play the next time you're on a downtown cruise. Mmmmm... a new favorite.
The delicate female voice in "Oahu - Wasure Nai (Dr. Toast remix)" is perfectly complemented by drifting guitars, slow, crisp beats and an overwhelming softness you just can't deny. Truly beautiful.

I'd
categorize Oz so late in the psychedelic chill department, or as 'acid-groove'
if there were such a genre. For those who have a taste for the sounds of some of
the Cosmophilia releases ( Ease Division tracks by Matenda, or Human Blue ), or
the LSD tracks by Drum Druids and Humito, this cd is up your alley. Most of the
tracks have sounds which lend themselves nicely to the psy-chill genre although
the grown-up nature of the compositions massages them into a comfortably
accessible sound of loungy grooves. A nice blend of styles no doubt, and a
stellar first release.
